A DAVAO City lawmaker said in an ambush interview on Tuesday morning, August 29, that the Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) aspirants should focus more on issues concerning the reproductive health of the youth.
Councilor Jaffar Marohomsalic, who is also the city’s Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) Federation president, reminded aspiring youth leaders to shy away from the typical community activities such as volleyball and basketball leagues.
“They should focus on the concerns especially gyud sa health sa atoang kabatan-unan because even before, when I was also a new SK chairperson I wasn’t aware nga ing-ana jud kadako ang problema especially, sa reproductive health (They should focus on the concerns especially on the health of our youth because even before, when I was also a new SK chairperson I wasn’t aware on how big the problem, especially on reproductive health),” Marohomsalic said.
He said that there is a need to strengthen data gathering about reproductive health, which would be helpful in formulating programs and projects that would address issues concerning the youth, including teenage pregnancy.
“We cannot really address problems if wala tay data kung baga that will be our baseline on creating our projects, our programs, our annual budget for the next year (We cannot really address problems if we do not have any data hence, that will be our baseline on creating our projects, our programs, our annual budget for the next year),” Marohomsalic said.
Marohomsalic emphasized that there are nine centers for youth participation which are education, health, economic empowerment, equity, social inclusion, security, governance, environment, global mobility, and active citizenship, wherein the SK aspirants could focus on. He, however, said that sports programs are also essential but he encourages the young leaders to conduct activities that are not related to leagues.
As the younger generation of today is more politically involved, Marohomsalic expects great things from them and that they will continue the legacy of the previous administration.
He also believes that now that the Republic Act (RA) 10742, otherwise known as the “Sangguniang Kabataan Reform Act of 2015” is in order.
Marohomsalic expressed that apart from compelling the SK officials to be more active, he said that they should persuade the youth of the barangay to participate in activities that are conducted by the SK in order to strengthen the relationship of the youth in the community.
As his term is nearing its end, Marohomsalic is looking into his two pending ordinances which are the Local Development Youth Office and the Local Youth Development Council. The two ordinances are in their final drafting stage. The goal of these ordinances is to provide technical assistance to the SK officials and strengthen the implementation of their activities. RGP
