CYCLISTS and motorists are reminded that bike lanes in different areas of the city are either strictly for bicycles or are shared lanes, said Leonardo Pamplona Jr. of the Davao City Transport and Traffic Management Office (CTTMO).

Pamplona, acting division head of the Traffic Enforcement and Street Management Divison of CTTMO, said protected bike lanes in the city, such as the one in Pichon street, must not be used by motorists.

“There are roads na gamay na naa bike lanes (There are narrow roads that have bicycle lanes). Kana na kalsada, (those) are roads na we have to share. That is not exclusively for the bike na lang gyod but there are roads that are strictly intended for bicycles,” Pamplona said during the Kapihan sa PIA media forum on Friday, November 25.

He said the lanes with the “bicycle lane” signage or icons are strictly for cyclists and motorists caught using it will be apprehended.

Pamplona assured that CTTMO follows the provisions of the Davao City Traffic Code.

“During the start of implementation of bike lanes, we created bicycle monitoring team na sila ang magbantay (that are assigned to monitor) kay amo gi-una ang mag-park dira sa bike lanes of which daghan na nadakpan ana (We started with vehicles that park along the bike lanes. We have caught many violators already),” he said.

However, with regard to the apprehensions made by the Land Transportation Office in Davao Region (LTO-Davao), Pamplona said they are monitoring the national roads in the city.

LTO-Davao regional director Neil Cañedo said in a previous interview with SunStar Davao that the actions of the agency is based on the approved ordinance of Davao City approved by the Department of Transportation (DOTr).

“Ang next to bike lane kanang katunga giputol nga dalan diha dapat moagi ang mga motor nga 190cc pababa (motorcycles that are under 190cc can use the lane or road next to the established bike lane),” Cañedo said. ICM
