AFTER issuing a warning against buying "bote-bote" petroleum, the Department of Energy (DOE-Mindanao) also warned the public anew from buying butane canisters.
DOE Mindanao Director Nilo Geroche made the warning after receiving reports of illegal trading and refilling of empty butane canisters.
Geroche pointed out that there is no refilling of butane in the Philippines because it has to be imported by suppliers in other countries.
Geroche warned that the contents of refilled canisters are not butane but liquefied petroleum gas or LPG which is dangerous.
He added that the small and thin butane gas canisters are not designed to be filled with LPG that can easily explode and result in fire.
Geroche even compared LPG refilling a butane gas canister to bottled gasoline.
Therefore, he called on the public not to compromise their safety for cheap yet dangerous products.
In a previous SunStar Davao report, suspects who will be apprehended will be charged with violation of the Presidential Decree (PD) 1865 or Illegal Trading of Petroleum Products.
PD 1865 prohibits illegal trading of petroleum and/or petroleum products; adulteration of finished petroleum products, or possession of adulterated finished products for the purpose of sale, distribution, transportation, exchange, or barter and underdelivery or underfiling beyond authorized limits in the sale of petroleum products or possession of underfilled liquefied petroleum gas cylinder for the purpose of sale, distribution, transportation, exchange or barter, among others.
