Drug education integrated in Grades 4-12 curriculum

DRUG education will now be part of the school curriculum in Davao City with the integration by the Department of Education (DepEd) of a special module introduced by the Davao City Anti-Drug Abuse Council (CADAC).

A first in the entire country, the module covers Grades 4 to 12 students in both public and private schools.

The Drug Education Module was crafted in partnership with DepEd, Department of Health, Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency, Philippine National Police, and the Davao city government.

School officials were also involved in the making of the module.

CADAC action man Michael Denton Aportadera said the objective was to support the campaign of the national government against illegal drugs — particularly in protecting schoolchildren and making them aware of the dangers of illegal drugs.

“Protecting the next generation from the drug problem is the best option that we have for our children,” he said.

Aportadera said the drug problem has reached the schools.

“Drugs have already affected a lot of families and even minors themselves. They are either exploited or being used. It destroys their future,” Aportadera said.

He added that the drug epidemic is controllable and preventable through the combined efforts of those in the government, the education sector and the community. (PR)
