DTI exec: Understanding supply, demand of abaca to uplift lives of producers

DEPARTMENT of Trade and Industry (DTI) Undersecretary for the Competitiveness and Innovation Group Rafaelita Alba cites three key points in understanding the supply and demand of abaca production and other natural fibers in the country to uplift not just the fashion industry but also the socio-economic of the communities who are top producers of our natural fibers.

During the Davao Weaving Congress: Kawankawan on Monday morning, October 9, 2023 at the Royal Mandaya Hotel, Davao City, Alba emphasized the use of innovative technology in collaboration with the Department of Agriculture (DA), consistent local fashion shows that promote abaca, and integration of the entire supply and value chain of the natural fibers.

“While we keep on promoting our natural fibers and fabrics, there is still an insufficient supply. It is not only in Davao but as well as in other areas. That is why I think importante na (it is important that) we work together with the DA in terms of improving yung (the) productivity ng ating (of our) agricultural sector being able to expand areas, areas being planted to these natural materials. The use of technology is important like automation, the use of wood planting materials, and practices we can share with our farmers,” she said.

Alba added, “Second point is we need to go to land yung mga fashion shows kase once makita, andaming magagandahan, tataas ang supply (Second point is we need to run fashion shows in different areas because if people will be attracted to the products, the supply will increase.)”

“Last point is really the need for us to integrate the supply value chain for us to connect fashion, fashion design, textile, as well as farmers and entrepreneurs because this is the only way to uplift the lives of our farmers and improve the income of all stakeholders belonging to these sectors,” she concluded.

The weaving congress was a two-day event wherein concerns and problems of weaving practices in the region were discussed.

Davao Region recently launched its first-ever Creatives Industry Roadmap 2024-2030 in the country last September 26, this year during the first Fiesta Kadayawan 2023 through the collective effort of the National Economic Development Authority-Davao Region (Neda-Davao Region), National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) and DTI.

It serves as the blueprint for public and private sectors to protect and harness the 73 creative industries including the Philippine fashion industry.
