Friday’s rains cause landslide

AFTER the massive flooding on Wednesday, another heavy downpour occurred on Friday evening that caused landslide at Balon Hilltop, Barangay 19B, Davao City affecting 21 individuals.

Hundreds were also evacuated after water level in some areas rose.

The soil erosion was reported at 10:48 p.m. on August 31 and the Barangay Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council (BDRRMC) 19 immediately responded to the area.

Based on the report, one house was partially damaged affecting three families. No injuries, however, were reported.

Due to the heavy downpour, a knee-level street flooding occurred in the areas of Puan, Talomo and at Vietnam Village in Barangay Talomo after the canal overflowed. The Talomo BDRRMC has ordered preemptive evacuation but allegedly the residents did not heed the call.

Likewise, also reported was a street flooding in Bulusan, NHA Bangkal at knee-level.

Following the heavy rains, the Davao City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDDRMO) Operation Center has advised for a pre-emptive evacuation of residents in flood-prone areas in Barangay Bunawan and Panacan as flooding in the upland areas of the city was possible.

Moreover, the trough of low-pressure area brought moderate to heavy rains in Baguio District, Marilog District, Tugbok District, and Paquibato District at 5:10 p.m.

Also, the BDRRMC in Matina Pangi has reported river overflow at Kilometer 8 Bridge. At 6:12 p.m., the CDRRMO Operation Center urged the residents to conduct pre-emptive evacuation in barangays along Talomo and Matina Rivers, particularly Barangay Talomo, Brgy. Matina Pangi, Brgy. Matina Crossing, and Barangay Matina Aplaya because of the looming danger.

However, all the river channels were monitored at a safe level.

Authorities also warned residents of moderate to heavy rain over Paquibato areas that may cause the level of Lasang River to rise.

With this weather condition, all Barangay Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Centers along the river line have been alerted to take precautionary measures and pre-position their responders as flood may occur.

CDRRMO operations head Rodrigo Bustillo said that as of 9:30 p.m. on August 31, a total of 142 evacuees were housed at San Lorenzo Ruiz Parish from Morio-Morio Village and Teachers Village and Cemento, Barangay Talomo. Around 300 evacuees were also sheltered at Lourdes Parish in Bangkal from Taal 1, Taal 2, Bulusan and San Juan.
