THE human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) cases in Davao City has reached 3,613 as of July 2021.

Data from the Epidemiology Bureau of the Department of Health showed that this was an increase from the 3,285 HIV cases recorded in Davao City as of September 2020.

Dr. Jordana Ramiterre, head of Davao City's Reproductive Health and Wellness Center (RHWC-Davao), said the current data is cumulative from last year, which makes all cases of HIV considered active cases since the virus is incurable.

According to Ramiterre, the slight increase can be attributed to the more relaxed Covid-19 restrictions and protocols.

"Meaning, more have come to access services already as contrast to last year when we had the hard lockdowns," she said.

RHWC-Davao currently has facilities for patients dealing with sexually transmitted infections (STI), an acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (Aids), and HIV.

Ramiterre said the facilities provide services in line with prevention, treatment, and care such as education campaigns, counseling, as well as diagnosis and treatment for common STIs.

HIV screening and testing are also available, along with HIV antiretroviral treatment for individuals with a positive diagnosis.

"Even at the height of the pandemic, the services continued," said Ramiterre.

During the height of restrictions, Ramiterre said RHWC-Davao provided mobile services for patients and delivered services in treatment hubs outside Davao City.
