Keep veggie gardens, NNC urges

THE National Nutrition Council (NNC) in Davao region welcomes this month with a gardening idea for the Nutrition Month celebration.

Speaking at the Kapehan sa Dabaw at SM City in Ecoland, NNC-Davao Regional Nutrition Program coordinator Dr. Ma. Theresa Ungson urged the public to go back to the basics of gardening and plant nutritious vegetables aside from flowers.

With the theme: "Ugaliing Magtanim, Sapat na Nutrisyon Aanihin," Ungson said it is best for the public to have vegetable gardens for sufficient nutrition.

Ungson said the council aims to prevent malnutrition through basic gardening. She added that aside from the benefit that the public will get from gardening, they could also contribute to the environment through gardening.

"[The concept is] one must pick a vegetable plant from their garden, cook it, and serve it to your family," Ungson said.

She also said that gardening could reduce a family's expenses on food.

She said the concept of an edible landscaping aside from decorative plants is that the gardener could add some herbs and other vegetables. She added that there are plants that can be eaten raw and give more nutrition to individuals.

NNC-Davao with the Department of Agriculture and its active partners will provide fruits and vegetables food and seeds while the Department of Education will ensure all students’ well-being in schools. ( Abigail Joyce Cahiwat, MSU-Marawi Intern)
