

THE late Davao Oriental Governor Corazon Nuñez-Malanyaon will be laid to rest in Davao City on July 7.
This was announced by the Provincial Government of Davao Oriental in a Facebook post on Friday, June 30.
Malanyaon's remains lie in state at the Pieta Chapel, Cosmopolitan in Camus St., Davao City from Thursday, June 29 until Saturday, July 1.
She will be transferred to the Davao Oriental Provincial Capitol in Mati City, where a public viewing will be held on July 2 to 3, then on July 4 to 6 in Cateel, still in Davao Oriental.
Her remains will be returned to Davao City, where she will be laid to rest at the Davao Memorial Park.
Tribute and final respect
Government officials offered their condolences to the family and friends of Malanyaon.
Mati Mayor Michelle Rabat mourned the passing of the governor, days before the 56th anniversary of the province.
"Governor Corazon Malanyaon has left us! And at a time when we are supposed to be celebrating [...] the 56th anniversary of the Province of Davao Oriental has made the pain all the more unbearable," Rabat said.
She also said that the governor "came at a time when the province badly needed a unifying leader."
Former Davao Oriental Governor and current First District Representative Nelson Dayanghirang paid tribute to the late Governor Corazon Nuñez-Malanyaon.
Dayanghirang recognized the late governor as a "visionary leader whose unwavering dedication and commitment to public service transformed the landscape of the province."
"Her passion for the welfare and progress of Davao Oriental was evident in every endeavor she undertook. Her leadership have undoubtedly left a mark on the lives of countless individuals," he said.
The City Government of Davao also extended its condolences to the late governor's family.
"Governor Malanyaon's significant contributions and invaluable service not only to the province of Davao Oriental but also to Davao City will never be forgotten," Davao City said.
Since 2001, Malanyaon has served the province as the first district representative (2001 - 2007; 2016 -2022) and governor (2007 - 2016; 2022 - present). She started her political career when she was appointed as an OIC councilor of Davao City from 1986 to 1987. She was then duly elected as the number one Davao City Councilor from 1988 to 1992.
Senator Imee Marcos visited the wake of Malanyaon on Friday morning, June 30, to pay her last respect to the late leader.
"Ako ay nakikidalamhati at nagbibigay respeto kasama ang buong Davao Oriental sa pagpanaw ni Governor Corazon "Cora" Nuñez-Malanyaon," Marcos wrote on her post.
Former President Rodrigo Duterte paid his respects to the late Davao Oriental Governor Corazon N. Malanyaon at the Cosmopolitan Memorial Chapels in Davao City on early Friday morning, June 30.
Malanyaon and Duterte were both appointed by Former President Corazon Aquino to key positions in Davao City during the establishment of a revolutionary government in 1986.
Malanyaon was appointed as officer-in-charge (OIC) Councilor while Duterte was appointed OIC Vice Mayor.
Other officials who visited the late Governor's wake include Department of Tourism (DOT) Secretary Christina Garcia-Frasco, DOT-Davao Regional Director Tanya Rabat-Tan, members of the Sangguniang Panlalawigan, headed by Former Vice Governor and now Davao Oriental's new Governor, Niño Sotero Uy Jr.
Malanyaon passed away on Wednesday afternoon, June 28, 2023. She was 73.
Uy said the family informed them about the governor's death on Wednesday afternoon, around 3:50 p.m. The cause of death, however, was not specified.
