THE meat slaughtered and processed at the brand-new Malagos Slaughterhouse in Davao City can be sold nationwide, according to the City Economic Enterprise on Thursday, January 26.

Joseph Gabut, slaughterhouse master under the City Economic Enterprise, said the license to operate and accreditation of the Malagos Slaughterhouse was finally approved last week by the National Meat Inspection Services (NMIS).

The accreditation recognizes the Malagos Slaughterhouse as a Double-A facility, which means all the meat butchered and processed at the said slaughterhouse passes national standards and thus can be sold anywhere.

“Opportunity na sa atong mga entrepreneur sa meat industry na ma-expand nila ilang business kay pwede sila makabaligya outside Davao City and Davao region, nationwide na pwede (This is an opportunity for our meat industry entrepreneurs to expand their business because they can now sell outside Davao City and Davao Region),” Gabut said.

Located at Purok 3-A in Barangay Malagos, Gabut said the slaughterhouse is built within the city government’s 68-hectare property away from residential areas. He said the facility had to be built on a semi-industrial site.

It features cold storage facilities, blast freezers, and a meat processing plant with grinders, which allows clients to easily process and preserve the meat for a wider market reach.

A P13.5-million sewage treatment plan was also built within the facility to treat used water from the slaughterhouse before it is disposed of.

The 2.5-hectare Malagos Slaughterhouse is a non-halal slaughterhouse that processes exclusively hogs at this time.

The facility was worth more than P80 million, with the budget sourced from the Department of Agriculture’s National Livestock Program and Buttom-up-Budgeting Program, and the city government of Davao.

Although the license to operate was approved last week, the Malagos Slaughterhouse began its initial operation in September 2022 after it was inaugurated. ICM
