THE Mati City government commenced the dismantling of the turtle hatchery at Amihan sa Dahican on Tuesday, August 1. According to the Mati City Information Office, the dismantling complies with the termination order issued on March 30, 2023, by the City Administrator's Office. This order aims to transfer the turtle eggs to a new hatchery situated at Menzi Beach Park and Campsite. The move aims to ensure that the hatching process remains undisturbed, away from human interference and potential disturbances. The local authorities have already communicated the order to the group at Amihan, urging them to expedite the moving of the turtle hatchery. However, there have been objections to this decision. To ensure a smooth transition, the relocation of the turtle eggs received approval from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR). DENR personnel were present to oversee and verify the proper relocation of the eggs to the new site. Dahican Beach serves as the habitat for three endangered turtle species: the Hawksbill, Olive Ridley, and Green Sea turtle. Given their protected status under the Wildlife Resource Conservation and Protection Act (Republic Act 9147), the local government is committed to safeguarding these species from predators and other threats.
