HOMEGROWN foods must be promoted among families to achieve a healthy diet and food security, an official of the National Nutrition Council - Davao Region (NNC-Davao) said.

NNC-Davao program coordinator Ma. Teresa Ungson said this is in line with this year’s Nutrition Month’s theme “Healthy Diet, Gawing Affordable for All” - household food security is one of their key priorities and must be re-taught to everyone, especially to the children.

“By planting our own vegetables and fruits makatulong sa ating food security and also makatulong din ito sa environment,” Ungson said.

For this year’s nutrition month, Ungson said they are also promoting gardening and planting vegetables at home and in school.

She also said foods rich in trans fat must also be minimized to avoid health dangers and lifestyle diseases, and to read packaging labels to know the ingredients and the possible breakdown of nutrients found in such food.

“Kelangan matuto din tayo magbasa ng labels, let’s get to know the food that’s on the shelves,” she said.

“We must understand what food is best for us and what food will make us unhealthy,” Ungson said.

Meanwhile, Ungson said the launching of Nutrition Month for Mindanao will be in Tagum City on July 3 at the Atrium in New Tagum City Hall.

Guests coming are Department of Health (DOH) Secretary Teodoro Herbosa, Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Secretary Rex Gatchalian, and NNC executive director Azucena Dayanghirang. ICE
