Ordinance regulating taxi rentals, drivers pushed

THE Davao City Sangguniang Panlungsod Transportation Committee (DCSPTC) is collating position papers of taxi operators and the drivers about a proposed ordinance regulating the rental of taxis and preferred driving hours of taxi drivers.

Councilor Jesus Joseph Zozobrado, vice-chairman of the committee on transportation, on Thursday, May 3 told reporters this was proposed after a committee hearing conducted with the drivers and operators on the last week of April.

The hearing was brought up before the city council after some drivers raised their concern over the P100 to P200 rental increase implemented by operators after they were mandated to install dashboard cameras and Global Positioning System (GPS) applications in their units.

"During the hearing, the operators were temporarily asked to roll back the amount to P100 additional rental fee, as of the moment we still do not have a regulation which tells how much you can ask for rental fee," Zozobrado said.

He added that the drivers pleaded for just the P100 increased rental fee, since P200 is too much for them.

Zozobrado said it is the discretion of the taxi operator whether to follow the suggestion of the committee.

He said that after they have gathered the position paper, in the coming days, he hopes that they will be able to craft an ordinance that will specify how much should the rent be for brand new and older units.

"We will also include the number of hours that the drivers would get if they will drive 24 hours or 12 hours," he said.
