Police to enforce law requiring CCTVs

AUTHORITIES will inspect business establishments in Davao City to determine whether these are installed with closed-circuit television (CCTV) that will help in preventing and solving crime.

Davao Police Regional Office (PRO 11) director Chief Superintendent Marcelo Morales, in a press conference Thursday, September 27, said that as part of their security measures in addressing crimes, they will start checking the establishments whether these are equipped with CCTVs. These establishments, he said, are the police’s partner in crime prevention.

They will enforce the city ordinance requiring all establishments with a minimum capitalization of P3 million and above to install CCTV cameras to minimize crimes in the city.

“Ang gagawin namin ay iisa-isahin namin yong building kung anu-ano ang mga target hardening measures na ginawa nila to protect ‘yong kanilang investment,” Morales said.

The businessmen were briefed that one of these days police officers will be visiting their establishments to ask for their security prevention protocols.

“I-che-check namin kung meron [CCTV], kung meron man ay i-indicate namin yon sa aming map para in the future kung may mangyari, alam namin kung sinu-sino ang establishment na pwede naming lapitan at makunan ng footage kung saka-sakaling dumaan doon ang suspects,” he said.

This will also assess their security measures whether they have security guards, K9 unit, other security equipment such as handheld scanner, walk through scanner and X-ray scanner.

Morales added that businessmen should protect their investments and CCTV is one of the ways in protecting it.

Before proceeding to these areas, Morales assured that the police personnel will be oriented first on the manner of interviewing the business owners so they would not look like investigating or conducting surveillance.

“Magkakaroon muna ng briefing kung paano isasagawa ‘yon because we want our personnel na pag nakikipag-usap sa mga businessman ay dapat they are very courteous at ma-explain nila yong reason kung bakit [at] para ma-solicit naming yong cooperation ng ating mga businessmen,” Morales said.
