Purchase of speed guns put on hold

THE procurement of the new speed guns of Davao City Transportation and Traffic Management Office (CTTMO) has been put on hold because officials want the model that immediately issues receipts.

CTTMO head Dionisio Abude told reporters last Monday that while the city has bought speed guns already, they already called the supplier if they can still return it in exchange for the speed guns with the specifications they want.

Abude said two speed guns were listed for purchase last year. These are good for no-contact apprehension and can be encoded with the location and enforcer but it cannot immediately release receipts, unlike the breath analyzer used to apprehend violators of the Anti-Drunk Driving law.

"After the operation you will still have to connect it to a computer to check the captured data, which provides us the plate number. For example, it captured 100 plate numbers a day, so we will have to get the number and ask LTO for the record of the owner and summon him and send an alarm to LTO. This means that the violator will only know he has a violation upon LTO renewal, but if the gun can issue receipt, the violator will be immediately informed," he said.

He also said it will depend upon their correspondence with the supplier if such model is available.

The speed gun recently bought by the city government costs P560,000 each.

Abude added that their office has existing five speed guns, and once the new speed gun will be finally used, they will use it to augment speed limit apprehensions in Toril, Calinan, Bunawan and Diversion road.
