A STUDENT of the University of Mindanao (UM) Matina campus has expressed her concern on cracks found inside the Professional Building following the magnitude 6.9 earthquake that struck the southern part of Mindanao Sunday, December 15.

In her message sent to SunStar Davao, the student feared that the building might collapse due to the cracks. They still have classes on that building and some of her classmates were afraid to enter.

The school's maintenance head Emmanuel Gallora told SunStar Davao a structural evaluation has been done to check the structural integrity of the building.

As per feedback, there has been no threat to the building following the occurrence of cracks in the aftermath of the seismic activity.

Gallora allayed the student's fears, citing the cracks were not a structural component but only masonry. The walls were also made of hollow blocks.

The cracks were located in the fire escape stair of the building and he assured that the building is safe for occupancy.

Repair on the cracks is also being carried out, said Gallora.

UM's last class is set on Friday, December 20.
