THE oldest living war veteran in Davao City celebrated his 100th birthday in the Insular Waterfront Hotel, Davao City, July 10 evening, with Vice-President Sara Duterte as the guest of honor.

Duterte graced the 100th birthday of Teofilo Gamutan, a World War II veteran whom she called a “patriot” for being a hero who fought for the motherland.

“Your service during World War II will never be forgotten, we look at you today and we can see your bravery of your soul, and the pride of your heart as someone who fought for our motherland,” Duterte said in a speech, July 11.

“We are reminded of the price of the freedom that we enjoy today,” she added.

Duterte said Gamutan was a commanding officer of the Headquarters Company of the 84th Infantry Battalion of Philippine Army Reserve in Bohol back in World War II. Gamutan is also the oldest of four living veterans residing in Davao City.

“To celebrate the life of a man whose sacrifices, selflessness, and love for our country brought us our freedom as a country and sharpened our values as a nation that cradled noble heroes.” Duterte said.

Gamutan is a veteran who fought against the Japanese soldiers.

The Vice President has also attended Gamutan’s previous birthday celebrations.

Meanwhile, Duterte added in her post that it was an honor to be a part of Gamutan's celebration and appreciated his family and loved ones for allowing her to be in attendance.

“Huwag sana nating kalimutan ang mga taong katulad ni Sir Teofilo na larawan ng katatagan, katapangan, at tunay na pagmamahal sa ating bayan (May we not forget people like Sir Teofilo, who is a picture of courage, and true love for our country),” she wrote in her Facebook post.
