VICE President Sara Duterte donned a Maguindanaon traditional attire at the second State of the Nation Address (Sona) of President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos, showcasing her respect and appreciation for the rich cultural heritage of the Moro tribe living in South Central Mindanao.

Her attire served as a meaningful gesture and display of cultural appreciation which further emphasizes the importance of acknowledging and preserving the unique cultural identities that make up the tapestry of the Philippines.

“Ang Bangala na gawa ni Israel Ellah Ungkakay mula Cotabato City ay may kasamang inaul — isang local fabric na habi sa cotton at silk at itinuturing na isa sa kanilang kultural na kayamanan dahil lumalarawan ito sa karangalan, katapangan, pamana, at kasaysayan ng Maguindanao,” the vice president said

The intricate design of this traditional attire serves as an identity and source of pride for the Maguindanaon women. It comprises several elements, including the ‘banggala sugyang’, which functions as the blouse. The ensemble is adorned with ‘bulawan a patung’, a striking gold button brooch.

The attire also includes the saya, which serves as the skirt, completing the overall look. The Maguindanaon women wear the ‘Inaul malong’, a meticulously handwoven cloth that adds a touch of cultural significance and authenticity to their attire.

“Inaul malong has a lot of stories to tell. From its narrative inspiration, history, and weaving process, this handwoven fabric strengthens the identity of the Maguindanaon and Iranun people,” Hiyas sa Kadayawan 2019 Nuraini Ampatuan said.

“As a Maguindanaon designer, I started promoting our traditional attire before I even started my own brand. I sense this responsibility that I had to preserve our cultural heritage to recognize its beauty, authenticity, and identity of the Moro people,” Nuraini Ampatuan added.

Last year at the same gathering, Vice President Sara also wore a traditional dress from the Bagobo Tagabawa tribe from Deputy Mayor of the Tagabawa tribe of Davao City Bae Sheirelle Anino. (AJA)
