M5.8 quake shakes Sarangani

A MAGNITUDE 5.8 earthquake jolted parts of Mindanao early Sunday, April 20, 2025, with the strongest shaking recorded in Sarangani province, over 200 kilometers away from Davao City, according to the Department of Science and Technology-Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (DOST-Phivolcs).

The earthquake struck at 12:11 a.m. and was traced 67 kilometers south southwest of Palimbang, Sultan Kudarat. It had a shallow depth of ten kilometers and was tectonic in origin.

Phivolcs recorded Instrumental Intensity V in Kiamba, Sarangani, while Intensity IV was observed in Kalamansig, Sultan Kudarat; Tupi and T'Boli in South Cotabato; and Maitum, Sarangani. 

The tremor was also felt in Davao City, although no official intensity level was assigned for the area. No damages or casualties have been reported so far. Authorities continue to monitor the situation, and local disaster response units have been placed on alert in case of aftershocks.

Phivolcs said no tsunami is expected from the offshore quake but advised residents, especially in affected areas, to stay cautious and be prepared for possible aftershocks.

The public is reminded to follow safety guidelines during seismic events and to report any damage or emergency situations to local authorities. DEF
