THE Malagos Halal Slaughterhouse is now categorized as Double A or "AA", which signifies that it upholds the highest standards in hygiene, and meat processed in the slaughterhouse can now be distributed throughout the Philippines.

"Double A siya (it is "AA") meaning tanang produkto nga nakatay pwede siya i-distribute sa  (meaning all of the products can now be distributed) within Philippines — throughout the country,” Gertrudes Peñalosa, officer-in-charge of the slaughterhouse operations, said during a radio interview on Davao City Disaster Radio on Wednesday, March 19, 2025.

Peñalosa added that the slaughterhouse was accredited by the National Meat Inspection Service (NMIS) in 2024. An inspection was conducted for the issuance of the License to Operate (LTO).

There are now three slaughterhouses in Davao City: one in Maa (the old slaughterhouse) and two in Barangay Malagos — the Non-halal and Halal.

Currently, the Non-halal slaughterhouse in Malagos processes around 120 live pigs daily, accepting only lechon, fatteners, and those for meat shops in compliance with Double-A accreditation standards.

Additionally, the slaughterhouse offers slaughtering, meat cutting, and cold storage services, with fees ranging from P268.03 for slaughtering to P5 per kilo for blast freezing.

"Sa atong balaod, kana lang yearly slaughtering fee na five percent, kana lang pwede mag-increase every year (According to our ordinance, the yearly slaughtering fee of five percent is the only one that can increase every year),” Peñalosa said.

In the Halal slaughterhouse, they allow the processing of other livestock such as carabao, goat, and sheep, under strict compliance with Halal slaughtering protocols and proper credentials. Strict entry protocols are implemented, requiring veterinary certification, animal certification, and other regulatory documents to uphold food safety standards.

Also, the slaughterhouses' operations have reached P33,945,420.03 in revenue collection. This is higher by 3.61 percent compared to its revenue in 2023, which was P32,761,194.05.

Maa Slaughterhouse has achieved 99.52 percent of its target collection, which translates to P13,136,236.96, while the Malagos Slaughterhouse reached an income of P20,809,180.07. DOrSU intern Jhayrene Hermoso with reports from CIO
