THE Davao City Police Office (DCPO) has clarified that the incident involving a 19-year-old commuter inside a jeepney near Enrico Nograles National High School in Barangay Bago Aplaya, Davao City on Monday, February 10, 2025, was a choking incident, not a hostage situation, as some netizens had previously claimed.

Meanwhile, the 26-year-old suspect identified as “Renz”, an unemployed resident of Talomo Centro, Barangay Talomo, is set to face charges of physical injury after choking “Alyza.”

According to the victim’s statement during the investigation, the suspect suddenly choked her without apparent reason. Fortunately, she was able to escape unharmed.

The suspect is currently in police custody and will undergo a medical examination after sustaining several injuries when concerned citizens intervened and restrained him in Ulas.

Authorities said the investigation is ongoing to determine the motive behind the suspect's actions. The suspect claimed he has been suffering from depression following the death of his wife. He also has two children.

SunStar Davao attempted to reach out to the Baliok Police Station for an update, particularly regarding the psychological assessment and other evaluations for the suspect but yet to receive a response as of this press writing. DEF
