MATANAO, Davao del Sur — A man who allegedly shot two drinking companions on March 6, 2025, in Purok 6, Barangay Bagumbayan, is now in police custody.
One victim, identified as alias Aries from Magsaysay, Davao del Sur, died on the spot, while the other, alias Alex from Bansalan, remains in critical condition at the Provincial Hospital in Digos City.
Police identified the suspect as Roy Sumaljag, the owner of the house where the victims were drinking. According to the Homicide and Arson Section (HAS) of the Matanao Municipal Police Station, Sumaljag allegedly fired his gun after being offended by remarks made during their conversation.
Investigators reported that Sumaljag, angered by the victims’ behavior, grabbed a gun and fired multiple shots. Aries died instantly, while Alex sustained severe gunshot wounds.
The suspect fled the scene but later surrendered to the Matanao Police Station. Authorities recovered five empty shells from a .45 caliber pistol at the crime scene.
Charges are now being prepared against him. JPC
