DAVAO City Police Office (DCPO) Acting Director PCol. Hansel Marantan has recommended at least three potential successors, including one officer currently holding a higher position within the DCPO, as he formally seeks relief from his post due to serious health concerns.
Marantan confirmed during the June 17, 2025 20th City Council session at the Sangguniang Panlungsod that he filed his relief request on June 13 and has since gone on leave. He said he is awaiting the decision from the Philippine National Police (PNP) within 15 days.
“I am in pain. I have medical conditions, so I have to address them,” he said in an interview, revealing he has 52 metal screws in his body, a total knee replacement, and a titanium spine — conditions that classify him as a person with disability (PWD). “I just need to rest,” he added, dismissing any notions of political or career-related motives behind his decision.
Before stepping down, Marantan made his formal exit call to the 20th City Council, where he highlighted DCPO’s accomplishments during his tenure from July 10, 2024, to June 13, 2025. Under his leadership, all 760 focus crime cases were resolved, including 359 thefts, 160 rapes, 105 incidents of physical injury, 76 robberies, 27 murders, 24 carnappings, seven homicides, and one carjacking.
He also noted zero incidents of terrorism and election-related violence throughout his time in office. For these accomplishments, the City Council passed a resolution commending his service, initiated by Councilor Conrado Baluran.
To recall, Marantan was appointed as DCPO chief in July 2024 following a series of leadership turnovers that saw three colonels cycle through the post in a single day. His term also coincided with internal reshuffles, including the dismissal of 35 officers and the controversial reassignment of 19 station commanders.
While declining to name his recommended successors, Marantan assured the public that he has endorsed capable leaders.
An acting director will be named while awaiting the decision of national police officials. He also intends to personally inform Mayor Sebastian “Baste” Duterte of his departure. DEF
