COLONEL Hansel Marantan has stepped down as chief of the Davao City Police Office (DCPO) after nearly a year, as he takes on a new role at the Philippine National Police (PNP) headquarters.
On June 30, Marantan confirmed his reassignment to the Peace Process and Development Center (PPDC) in Camp Crame. He said the new post involves direct coordination with government agencies to address armed conflict and support peace initiatives, especially concerning groups like the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters (BIFF) and Abu Sayyaf.
He said his work at the PPDC will involve leading peace-building efforts and coordinating with government stakeholders. Marantan described the office’s scope as wide-ranging, with responsibilities that require in-depth engagement across sectors.
He said PNP Chief Nicolas Torre III had asked him to take on the role, citing his experience in field operations. Torre told him that while many officers are trained for combat, few are equipped to manage the long-term work of building peace.
Marantan said he is still reviewing the PPDC’s mandate and expects the role to be challenging. He also noted that conflict sometimes becomes part of the peace process, although the ultimate goal remains nonviolence.
Alongside professional reasons, Marantan also cited health concerns for his departure. He formally asked for relief from his post on June 13 and is currently on medical leave.
He disclosed undergoing a total knee replacement, and said he now lives with a titanium spine and 52 metal screws. These conditions, he said, classify him as a person with disability. “I just need to rest,” he added.
Marantan served as DCPO chief for 11 months. The PNP has yet to name his replacement. DEF
