THE Mati City Fish Port complex, which was opened on October 23, aims to be a self-operating economic enterprise that targets to generate P5 million in revenue within five years.

The fish port opening in Purok Calagundian, Barangay Central, Mati City, was in time for the Sambuokan Festival’s 20th festival celebration.

In its press release, the Mati City Information Office (CIO) said the newly-opened fish port would serve “as a center for systematic activities in commercial fishing in the region” and will be a terminal point for unloading, loading, and selling of fish and other aquatic products.

The fish port will also operate with the augmentation of sanitary measures to prevent damage to the surrounding water bodies and preserve the quality of seafood products.

The fish port is projected to meet the needs of approximately 200 commercial fishing vessels and contribute to the development of the fishing industry, not only in Mati City but also in neighboring cities.

It is estimated that this establishment can handle and process around 4,000 tons of fish annually, which is said to “exceed the required seafood demand in the entire Davao Oriental province”.

Mati City Mayor Michelle N. Rabat reportedly said that it is now possible to catch fish up to 10,200 metric tons and more than 1,600 vessels can use the fishport.

Dashiel Indelible Jr., head of Mati City Tourism Office, said previously that the fish port complex will significantly boost their tourism potential, especially since they are keen to improve their agritourism. ICE
