THE Davao Light and Power Company (Davao Light) assured consumers that the recent yellow alert status in Mindanao, declared by the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP), will have minimal effect on power rates.
Fermin Edillon, head of Davao Light’s Reputation Enhancement Department, said the official power rate for August is not yet available, but July’s rate stood at ₱8.70 per kilowatt-hour — one of the lowest in the Davao Region. August rates will be released in the coming days and posted on the company’s official Facebook page.
“Since naay yellow alert, naa yata duha ka planta na nag shut down so mao tu affected atoang power supply in Mindao so it also affects atoang supply here sa Davao (Since there was a yellow alert, two power plants shut down, which affected the power supply in Mindanao and, in turn, our supply here in Davao),” Edillon said during the Habi at Kape forum on August 13, 2025, at Ayala Malls Abreeza.
The NGCP earlier announced on August 1 that the Visayas and Mindanao grids were placed under yellow alert due to multiple power plant outages. A yellow alert means supply is still enough to meet demand, but reserves are thin, and brownouts may occur if more plants shut down. The status was lifted later that evening at 7:46 p.m.
As of August 13, Mindanao has an available generating capacity of 3,382 megawatts (MW), a system peak demand of 2,487 MW, and an operating margin of 895 MW.
NGCP data also showed that as of August 11, the island’s total transmission capacity stood at 4,697 MW, with 3,291 MW from existing dependable power plants and 1,406 MW of available transmission capacity. RGP
