THE Commission on Elections (Comelec) has issued a firm reminder to all candidates and political parties to suspend campaign activities during the Holy Week, in line with election laws and guidelines.
In a statement released this week, the Comelec cited Resolution No. 10999, which explicitly bans any form of political activity—including rallies, motorcades, and public speeches—on Maundy Thursday (April 17) and Good Friday (April 18), 2025, both considered sacred days in the predominantly Catholic country.
The resolution aims to uphold the solemn observance of Holy Week while ensuring a fair and orderly election process. Comelec stressed that engaging in campaign activities during these prohibited dates constitutes an election offense.
Violators may face penalties under the Omnibus Election Code, including one to six years of imprisonment, disqualification from holding public office, and loss of voting rights, as outlined in Sections 263 and 264.
Comelec also said that local officials, law enforcement, and election officers are on high alert to monitor compliance and act against any violations.
As the national and local elections approach, the Commission is urging all candidates to demonstrate respect for religious traditions and maintain discipline throughout the campaign period. DEF
