THE Davao City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO) confirmed that no casualties were recorded in the recent flooding in Matina Crossing and Calinan.
According to an initial report, the CDRRMO mobilized the Barangay Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Committees (BDRRMCs), emergency clusters, and volunteers to assist affected residents.
CDRRMO Chief Alfredo Baloran commended Dabawenyos for adhering to preemptive evacuation protocols, emphasizing that their cooperation was crucial in ensuring public safety.“We encourage everyone to stay updated on weather advisories and prioritize safety above all else,” he said.
The CDRRMO continues to monitor weather conditions in Davao City and has urged residents in flood-prone areas to remain vigilant, as scattered rain showers are forecasted in the coming days.
The City Social Welfare and Development Office (CSWDO) and the City Health Office (CHO) were deployed to evacuation centers, where evacuees received hot meals and medical services.
The flooding caused damage to the Matina Pangi Bridge. According to the Barangay Matina Pangi Peace and Order Facebook page, floodwaters eroded part of the bridge at Km. 9, affecting its structural stability.
As of 9:17 a.m. on January 5, 2025, CDRRMO reported that key rivers in the city, including Licanan, Bunawan, Lasang, Lipadas, Talomo, Matina, and Davao Rivers, were at safe levels.
Localized thunderstorms triggered street flooding in Calinan, Matina Crossing, Aplaya, and Pangi on January 4. By 6:02 p.m., the Matina River in Barangay Matina Biao reached a critical level, prompting mandatory evacuations in affected areas.
Rescue operations were conducted in the Arroyo Compound, Matina Crossing, where rising water levels trapped residents in waist-deep floodwaters.
Flooding also led to the temporary closure of the Balusong Bridge in Matina and the relief bridge connecting Matina Aplaya and Bangkal. In Calinan, several houses and highways were inundated.
