THE Office of Civil Defense-Davao Region (OCD-Davao) thanked local governments and frontline agencies for their swift, coordinated response to the tsunami alert triggered by a powerful undersea quake off Russia’s eastern coast.
In a radio interview with DXDC RMN Davao, OCD-Davao Regional Director Ednar Dayanghirang praised local leaders and communities for their vigilance and preparedness. While the region was spared from the anticipated tsunami, he said the proactive measures taken were commendable.
Several LGUs immediately ordered preemptive evacuations, suspended classes in coastal and low-lying areas, and mobilized emergency teams right after the alert was issued—actions Dayanghirang said reflect a stronger regional capacity to respond to major disasters.
The magnitude 8.8 quake on July 30 prompted tsunami warnings for parts of eastern Mindanao, including areas in the Davao Region, due to the Philippines’ location along the Pacific Ring of Fire. No tsunami waves reached Philippine shores, but the event underscored the importance of sustained disaster readiness.
Dayanghirang credited ongoing collaboration among LGUs, national agencies, and residents for the region’s improved response and emphasized the need to keep that momentum going. He added that OCD continues to work with Phivolcs and local disaster offices to monitor seismic activity and issue timely alerts when needed. DEF
