DAVAO City is more than just the "King City of the South" or the "Durian Capital of the Philippines." It is a city that soars—fueled by resilience, unity, and the bayanihan spirit of its people. Like the mighty Philippine Eagle, which braves strong winds and adapts to change, Dabawenyos continues to rise above challenges, building a future founded on strength and solidarity.

Strengthening disaster preparedness

Davao City remains committed to enhancing disaster resilience by investing in lifesaving infrastructure.

In late 2024, the local government boosted its emergency response capabilities with 38 new vehicles and specialized equipment, including cardiac life support ambulances, fiber boats, and excavators.

Following the turnover of some of these resources to the Davao City Police Office (DCPO), acting director of Police Colonel Hansel Marantan emphasized their significance: "This move shows how serious Davao City is about disaster risk reduction. By investing in the DCPO, the city is ensuring it’s ready for anything. It’s all about creating a safer, more resilient Davao City where everyone can feel secure."

This strategic investment ensures that Davao remains vigilant and prepared, strengthening the city’s ability to respond effectively to crises and emergencies.

Environmental conservation

Sustainability is at the heart of Davao City’s development roadmap. Since revamping its Climate Change Committee in 2023, the city has ramped up efforts in tree-planting, waste management, and climate resilience programs.

One of its pioneering initiatives is the City Plan of Action for the Prevention, Reduction, and Management of Marine Litter—the first of its kind in Region 11. This initiative mobilizes schools, businesses, and local communities to adopt sustainable practices, embodying the bayanihan spirit in conservation.

The Philippine Eagle Foundation (PEF) also plays a crucial role in protecting the critically endangered Philippine Eagle. With strong support from the local government and private stakeholders, PEF has expanded its conservation programs, habitat rehabilitation efforts, and educational initiatives.

Notably, Boeing Southeast Asia adopted two rescued eagles, Hiraya and Makisig, contributing to their care and the National Bird Breeding Sanctuary. In a significant milestone, Chick 31 – Riley, a Philippine Eagle bred in captivity, successfully hatched on January 16, 2025—a testament to Davao’s commitment to biodiversity conservation.

Rising as one

The spirit of One Davao is reflected in every effort—whether in disaster resilience, environmental advocacy, or collective progress. Like the Philippine Eagle soaring high above the mountains, the city’s strength lies in its unity, adaptability, and relentless pursuit of a better future.

As Davao City embraces the year ahead, it does so with unwavering determination—rising together, unshaken, and ready to reach new heights. KBP
