Editorial: Safety for the families

ON WEDNESDAY, news broke out of a hostage-taking in one of the prominent subdivisions in Davao City.

The incident took place at the Woodridge Park subdivision in Maa where the suspect, who was mentally disturbed, was killed and three others were injured.

While investigation is still ongoing, it is scary to think that such incident happened in a quiet village in the city. The village is home to a number of middle-income to high-income families.

For those coming here, I think you can observe that the security here can be "strict". However, it seems like there were lapses in the security of the subdivision. Did they get too complacent or were they too familiar with the suspect, who happens to be a former homeowner here, when he entered the subdivision?

Even though Davao City is a generally peaceful city, homeowners associations or the management of the subdivisions should not be complacent when it comes to the security of the village.

Maybe it is time for the management of the subdivisions and even condominiums to reevaluate their security practices to ensure the safety of those who live there.

It might also be time for the security forces in the city to step-up their patrols in residential areas.

If that incident can happen in one of the posh subdivisions in the city, then it can happen in others as well. How can Dabawenyos get a good night sleep if they don't feel safe?
