Mendoza: Good news to Science, Math teachers

A GOOD news in times of Pandemic.

The Department of Education (DepEd) has encouraged high school Science and Mathematics teachers to apply for a government-provided graduate scholarship, through Part-Time Scholarship for Science and Mathematics Teachers of the Department of Science and Technology-Science Education Institute (DOST-SEI) as part of delivering quality education.

DepEd Secretary Leonor Magtolis Briones said that these challenges are confronting us and as we face this pandemic [and] she doubts that this will be our last pandemic, there will be more of them, we’ll be needing more scientists, more people in science and technology.

As stipulated in DepEd Memorandum No. 15, p. 2021, the grant is open for High School Science and Mathematics (S&M) teachers currently working with a teaching load and teaching experience of at least seven years. Once selected, the awardees will also receive a P20,000 tuition grant per semester and P60,000 thesis grant.

Furthermore, the program aims to make graduate education more accessible to talented Science and Mathematics (S&M) teachers who have limited financial ability to pursue their graduate studies; upgrade S&M teaching in secondary through teacher education programs; and accelerate the development of specialists in science and mathematics education.

Briones emphasized the need for educators to always strive for lifelong learning and need to be constantly educated, and must always strive to possess mastery in the identified fields.

She stressed that it is important that we do this so we can impart new learnings to our learners.

It was learned that the said program is under the Capacity Building Program in Science and Mathematics Education (CBPSME), in collaboration with the National Consortium in Graduate Science and Mathematics Education and the S&T Regional Alliance of Universities for National Development (Strand).

To date, there are 16 CBPSME and three (3) Strand universities throughout the Philippines that will serve as study placements for the scholarship.

The Memorandum also advised that those interested in the grant from among Science and Mathematics teachers throughout the Philippines visit the official SEI-DOST website at www.sei.dost.gov.ph.

With this move, this Corner hopes that the lives of the Science and Mathematics teachers will be better off especially that free studying for graduate education is now being offered.
