
THE Provincial Government of Davao de Oro has officially turned over permanent housing units at the Sitio Patagan Resettlement Site in Elizalde, Maco, Davao de Oro, to families affected by the Masara landslide.
The turnover ceremony, held on Sunday, December 8, 2024, marked a significant milestone for former residents of Kampo 1 Temporary Shelters in Barangay Elizalde, who were displaced by the February 6, 2024, tragedy.
The Local Government Unit (LGU) said that handing over the permanent housing units reflects its commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of the community.
The project was made possible through a collaborative effort involving cash donations, labor, and construction materials. This resettlement initiative is a key step in the LGU’s comprehensive plan to support the people of Maco, Davao de Oro.
Governor Dorothy “Dotdot” Gonzaga expressed gratitude to government agencies and private stakeholders whose collaboration made the project a reality.
“Dako kaayog importansya ang panimalay, mao na malipayon ko sa gipakita ninyo na suporta sa gobyerno (Having a home is so important, and I am happy to see your support for the government),” she said.
Congressman Ruwel Peter Gonzaga of District 2 also extended his thanks, highlighting the importance of partnerships in rebuilding lives.
“Ako malipayon ko nga sa isa ka higayon kabahin ko sa gobyerno, kabahin ko sa mga private stakeholders, kabahin ko sa empleyado sa gobyerno, kabahin ko sa pagpaningkamot ni Gov. Dot Dot nga mahimoan mog balay, og kamo ang sumbanan sa paglihok sa gobyerno alang kaninyo (I am happy that, at one point, I was part of the government, part of the private stakeholders, part of the government employees, and part of Governor Dot Dot's efforts to build homes for you. You are the model of how the government works for its people),” he said.
The Masara landslide in Barangay Masara, Maco, on February 6, 2024, claimed 93 lives, with 79 identified and eight still missing.
The disaster buried 62 houses, a bus terminal, a jeepney, and the Barangay Hall. Despite the tragedy, 32 individuals were rescued, including bus passengers who jumped to safety.
The completion of the resettlement project symbolizes a new beginning for the survivors, offering hope and stability after the devastating event. (RGP)
