DAVAO City Rookie rider Kyro Mangosong captured his first career victory in the LYR Parts VMAN Underbone 155LTD beginners category during the second leg of the ENEOS Motor Oil Regional Underbone Grand Prix (RUGP) 2025 held June 15 in Tagum City.
The son of motocross champion and ENEOS endorser Bornok Mangosong, the younger Mangosong rebounded from a did-not-finish (DNF) in the opening round in Davao City to take the top spot in Round 2, marking a major milestone in his transition from dirt to track.
Race director Jong Uy confirmed the result during the Davao Sportswriters Association (DSA) Forum at The Annex of SM City Davao on Thursday, June 19. “This was his redemption,” Uy said. “He didn’t finish the race in Round 1, but in Tagum, he showed grit and determination to win.”
Uy noted that Kyro’s switch to circuit racing represents a new path in the Mangosong family’s racing legacy. “Circuit racing is different from motocross,” he said. “But it’s clear that racing is in his blood.”
Despite the early setback, Kyro delivered a composed and confident run in Tagum. His win was met with praise from peers and veterans. “Proud father, proud moment,” Uy added. “This sport is not just about speed; it’s about heart, and Kyro showed that.”
Kyro’s breakthrough came as other top names also made headlines. Honda Philippines secured its first win of the season after Yamaha swept the Davao opener, reviving the team’s bid for the series title.
Veteran rider Deo Pondok continued his dominant run, winning back-to-back rounds in both Davao and Tagum. “He’s been one of the most consistent riders this season,” Uy said.
Yamaha maintained its strong overall performance with victories in two other categories, setting up a tight team battle as the RUGP moves to the Visayas.
The Tagum leg also welcomed ENEOS Philippines President Kanesugi Tomazo, who attended the races for the first time and personally awarded the winners. Uy said Tomazo’s presence helped elevate the event’s profile.
Tagum City, a regular RUGP host since 2009, again delivered solid crowd turnout and strong support under Mayor Rey T. Uy, a longtime motorsports advocate.
The Visayas leg of the RUGP series continues on September 14, 2025, with the Bohol Grand Prix at Panglao Kartways.
“We’re excited for the next phase,” Uy said. “From Mindanao to Visayas, we continue to grow motorsports across the country—with passion, resilience, and speed.” Lian A. Layson, Spamast Intern
