WITH Holy Week fast approaching, authorities are stepping up security across Davao City, especially in crowded locations, according to the Public Safety and Security Office (PSSO).
Angel Sumagaysay, PSSO chief, said during the ISpeak media forum on April 4, 2025, that the number of deployed personnel has increased by 500 to 700, bringing the total to over 3,000.
"Dili lang siya nakafocus sa event area, we are also considering the tourist destinations, katung mga beaches and of course kanang uban mga inland resorts (It’s not just focused on the event areas; we’re also covering tourist destinations, including beaches and inland resorts)," he said.
He added that 200 CCTV cameras across terminals are fully operational, aimed at monitoring suspicious activity and supporting rapid response operations. Authorities hope these measures will reduce crime during the Holy Week.
In addition to terminals, security teams will be stationed at major churches and remote areas like Calinan and Marilog, following a formal request from Archbishop Romulo Valles.
A coordination meeting with security and archdiocese members is set for April 7.
Sumagaysay also said that road closures near churches may occur based on requests from parish priests, to be coordinated with the City Transport and Traffic Management Office (CTTMO) and the City Council.
Key activities during Holy Week will include Mass and Adoration on April 17, Stations of the Cross on April 18, Easter Vigil on April 19, and Easter Sunday Masses on April 20.
Authorities remind the public to avoid carrying large amounts of cash, keep bags and valuables close, and stay alert for suspicious individuals or groups. They also encourage reporting any criminal activity to security or police immediately. Cine Grace Languay, DOrSU Intern with reports from RGP
