THE 20th City Council of Davao observed a one-minute silence during its Tuesday session on April 22, 2025, at the Sangguniang Panlungsod, in honor of the passing of Pope Francis.

The council also unanimously approved a resolution proposed by Councilor Pilar Braga, chairperson of the Committee on Education, Science and Technology, Arts and Culture, expressing sympathy and condolences to the Archdiocese of Davao over the death of the leader of the Roman Catholic Church.

Councilor Braga described Pope Francis as a beacon of hope and compassion who touched the lives of millions around the world. She praised his steadfast advocacy for environmental care, human dignity, and social justice.

“Through humility and kindness, Pope Francis reminded us that we are all children of God, worthy of love and respect,” Braga said. She added that his leadership revitalized the Church, promoting mercy, forgiveness, and inclusivity.

“He carried the wounds of a divided Church, the ache of the poor and the forgotten, and the weight of hope for a more merciful, humane, and Christlike world,” she said.

Braga noted that Pope Francis chose a path of simplicity when grandeur was expected, showing the world that true authority lies in humility. She said the Pope challenged the status quo and brought comfort to the marginalized.

The City Council unanimously approved the resolution expressing its sympathy and condolences on the passing of Pope Francis.

Meanwhile, Davao Archbishop Romulo Valles, during a special Mass held in honor of the late Pope, shared his sorrow over the Pope’s death. He announced that a portrait of Pope Francis would be displayed at San Pedro Cathedral, where the faithful may offer their prayers.
