AAK Fairlanes karatekas shine

THE Association for the Advancement of Karatedo (AAK) Fairlanes collected 13 gold medals, six silvers and three bronzes to rule the the 1st Karate Pilipinas region 11 championships held Sunday at the Gaisano City Gate.

AAK Dojo placed second with seven golds and two silvers followed by AAK University of the Immaculate Conception (UIC) with five golds, four silvers and one bronze.

University of Mindanao (UM) Davao got three golds and two silvers.

AAK Fairlanes' golds came from Chrieann Arellano (girls 12-13 intermediate kata girls, girls 12-13 kumite), Robert Lawrence Avanceña (boys 12-13 intermediate kata, boys 12-13 kumite), Stephen James Cartagena (boys 14-15 intermediate kata), Janna Alexandra Ramirez (girls 16-17 intermediate kata, girls 16-17 47 kgs), Ian Carlos Pascual (boys 16-17 intermediate kata), Jamaica Quiben (girls 16-17 advance kata, girls 16-17 -53kgs), Sofia Agullo (senior female kata advance, senior female -50 kg), Julian Ambrose Ramirez (seniors male kata advance) and Gabriel Quiñones (seniors male -67 kgs kumite).

Meanwhile, Atsuko Kaiyel Tan led the medal haul for AAK Dojo. She topped the girls 8-9 intermediate kata girls and girls 8-9 kumite.

UM Tagum, Renshinkan Karate Club, Shorin chi, Inawayan Karate Club and Shutokai Mati Karatedo Team also joined the tournament.

The top three placers, according to Karate Pilipinas regional director Rommel Tan, will advance to the national finals set in May.

Tan said the officiating team from Manila was headed by Bernard Alvarina and Ricky Elinon, both Asian Federation licensed judges/referees.
