All set for Kadayawan dragonboat festival

PREPARATIONS shift to high gear in Davao City's hosting of the 33rd Kadayawan sa Dabaw Dragonboat Festival 2018 that will unfurl on August 11 at the Sta. Ana Pier in Davao City.

Organizer Clarice Jane Calolot of Dragons del Sur, in a Facebook chat with Sun.Star Davao, said the second edition of the dragon boat event, which was first hosted in Davao City last 2017, will accommodate 20 teams from Manila, Cebu City, Iligan City, Surigao City, Island Garden City of Samal and Davao City.

She said they tapped the Departement of Education (DepEd) to provide free billeting for visiting teams in schools near the venue.

This year's edition has opened five categories which include the open standard boat, mixed standard boat, women small boat, open small boat and mixed small boat.

Boats, donated from Manila last year, will still be used during the upcoming competition.

Calolot also assured that medals and prizes won't be delayed just like what happened last year.

More than P300,000 cash prizes are at stake for the winners of the event backed by the Sports Development Division-City Mayors Office (SDD-CMO), Philippine Sports Commission (PSC), Philippine Canoe, Kayak and Dragonboat Federation (PCKDF), Dragon del Sur Club and Edge.
