Astudillo strikes, collects 3 gold medals in Canada

DAVAO City-based martial arts instructor Nell Jone Astudillo collected three gold medals in the Cheney's 41st Annual Western Canadian Karate Championships in Canada recently.

He clinched the first gold in kickboxing where he defeated a Thai-Canadian in the first round. He then beat a Canadian before subduing a Lebanese in the finals.

"All of them were younger than me," said Astudillo, who hails from Kidapawan.

The King's Sword Martial Arts Davao chief instructor also said, "I visited and trained in a karate gym here in High River, Canada then na mention nila na naay tournamen (they mentioned about a tournament) so I asked them if I could join and represent their gym White Tiger Martial Arts. Nag OK pud sila (They said okay) then they provided my gears and uniforms."

He also annexed a gold in the weapons forms kata using a Katana kata and another one in the forks grand championship forms event.

The grand championship pitted all the champions of all forms category. They performed another kata to be adjudged as grand champion.

"I performed a Bo (long stick) kata," he added.

Astudillo also finished second in open hand kata 35 years old and above division and in the point system par.

The tournament was presented by Cheney Zen Karate and Kickboxing Studios and sanctioned by Canadian Zen Karate Association.
