SHUTTLE for Hope Outwitting Thalassemia held its first fundraising badminton tournament for a cause, which was held last September 2, 2023, at Wheels n’ More Badminton Center, Davao City. The tournament was an opportunity for badminton enthusiasts to be part of a humanitarian mission, to raise funds and awareness of Thalassemia and to enjoy their sport at the same time.

Thalassemia is a renegade genetic blood disorder that is passed on from parents to their offspring which is characterized by a lack of protein and iron in the body and less production of hemoglobin from the bone marrow. In effect, it causes anemia and excessive tiredness. It is a rare disease striking 4 out of 10,000 people worldwide.

With a heavy heart, Dabawenyo siblings Jay Lord who is 11 years old and Jael Rhyne Paña, 7 years old get this life-changing diagnosis.

Though living an active and normal life, they have bouts of anemia more than a normal person. The sibling’s journey for a prolonged life entails regular blood transfusion, stem cell, and bone marrow transplants. Each patient will continue expensive procedures and treatments with an estimated amount of seven million pesos; in their case, it is times two.

Currently, Akai and the kids are in Thailand to undergo an operation.

The siblings’ parents John and Akai Paña, are hometown badminton legends and considered pillars of the badminton community, and the tournament was just one of the many ways for them to raise the funds they need for their children’s treatment. This project mobilized friends, family, and the community to help the Pañas, in these times of health crisis, demonstrating the strength of the badminton community that is banded together.

The money raised will go directly to Jay Lord and Jael Rhyne Paña’s treatment to try and alleviate the financial burden that coping with this disease can cause. They are encouraging a community of participants, sponsors, and supporters who can partake in their events and promote awareness as well.
