
DAVAO City teams ruled the volleyball competition of the Davraa Meet 2019 that ended at the Davao City-University of the Philippines (UP) Sports Complex Thursday, January 31.
The city's secondary girls spikers clinched the gold medal after whipping Davao del Norte, 25-19, 25-19, 25-16, in the finals at the Davao City-UP Sports Complex.
Davao City coach JC Velasquez, in a phone interview with SunStar Davao, on Thursday said that they were not complacent although they really wanted to win the championship from the start.
"The girls just had the right attitude and character. The skills just followed," he said, adding it's his first time to coach the city's Davraa team.
He was pertaining to Julia Andrea Angeles, Keanna Delle Adlao, Jan Angeli Cane, Chancy Corinth Chavez, Katrina May Blanco, Yvana Avik Sulit, Takako Fujimoto, Lyberica Yee, Geezel May Tsunashima, Hiromo Osada, Kathleen Joyce Lumbatan and Samantha Therese Castillones.
Karen Plaza and Jet Pastoriza were his assistant coaches.
Davao City's secondary boys team, coached by Dinri Yambao, recovered from a third set loss to beat arch-rival Tagum City, 25-11, 25-20, 22-25, 25-15, while the elementary boys squad bested Davao del Norte, 25-15, 25-11 and the elementary girls spikers spanked Tagum City, 25-16, 25-12.
In basketball, Davao City Durians thrashed Panabo City, 102-32, in elementary boys semifinals Thursday. The Harry Hipolito-coached squad and will play Compostela Valley in the 9 a.m. championship game Friday, February 1, at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary.
At the University of Southeastern Philippines (USEP) Gym, Davao City secondary boys team, mentored by Nestor Sorrosa of Holy Child College of Davao, crushed Panabo City, 142-64. The Durians will clash against Tagum City at 7:30 a.m. Friday in the crossover semifinals.
Meanwhile, Davao City's secondary boys football team edged Davao del Sur, 6-5, via penalty shootout to secure a spot in the championship match Friday.
