THE race to the most valuable player player (MVP) award in secondary girls division of the Davao Region Athletic Association (Davraa) Meet 2019 athletics competition has tightened after Andrea De Guia of Davao City and Charmin Miano of Digos City collected third gold medal Wednesday, January 30, at the University of Mindanao (UM) track oval.
De Guia, 16-year-old Grade 11 student of Dona Carmen Denia National High School, captured two more golds in 1,500-meter (m) run and 400m dash Wednesday morning to follow-up on her 3,000m gold earlier.
But the 1,500m tested her will and determination when she raced past her Digos City rival in the last 50 meters.
"Naningkamot gyud ko kay nag-una na sya pero nibira pajud ko. Napressure ko gamay kay naa pakoy dula sa sunod (I really pushed myself harder to outrun my rival. I was feeling the pressure as I had another run after the 1,500m)," De Guia, who already surpassed her two Davraa golds in 2018.
She is set to run in the 4X100 and 4X400 relay events. Should the Davao City secondary girls team of coach Valerio Bulpa, Jr. win these two events, De Guia is assured of the MVP title as Miano only had one remaining relay event left.
Miano, 15, who hails from Kapatagan, Digos City, added the secondary girls high jump gold to her Davraa 2019 collection Wednesday after she also clinched the long jump and triple jump golds during the first two days.
Her injured legs, however, were still bothering her. "Laban lang jud (I just kept fighting), puso!"
She said she no longer attempted to improve her record for fear of further damaging her hurt legs.
Miano outclassed Davao Oriental's Dessa Jane Limpag and Davao City's Bernadette Mendiola who settled for silver and bronze, respectively.
Meanwhile, Digos City's Princess Mae Pudy (36.93m) annexed the secondary girls javelin throw gold over Davao del Norte's Edchill Adorable (32.90) and Davao del Sur's Kyle Degino (29.91m).
Davao Occidental's Edzel Mae Villalobo snatched the elementary girls javelin throw gold even as Davao City's Kate Cel Gervacio copped the elementary girls high jump gold.
Davao City also harvested more golds courtesy of Stacey Caneda (elementary girls 400m hurdles), Sherwin Narvasa (elementary boys 400m run, 400m hurdles), Ryan Setenta (elementary boys 1,500m), Eliazar Tagbilaran (elementary boys 100m dash), Christine Jean Pongaron (secondary girls 100m dash), Norman Carl Luardo (secondary boys 1,500m, 800m) and Kenneth Alipan (secondary boys 400m hurdles).
