MANILA - The Department of Education (DepED) Davao Region issued a public advisory on Thursday, July 27, mandating all Davao Region Athletic Association (Davraa) athletes to stay within their billeting quarters at the Concepcion Integrated School in Marikina City. This precaution ensures everyone's safety due to the occasional rain showers in Metro Manila caused by the prevailing southwest monsoon and the approaching tropical cyclone this weekend.

According to DepEd Davao regional spokesperson Jenielito "Dodong" Atillo, the directive from DepEd regional director Allan Farnazo was implemented as of 4 a.m. on July 27. The advisory was specifically addressed to the Davao Eagles athletes, coaches, chaperons, delegation staff and officials.

Despite the inclement weather, Atillo mentioned that the Davraa delegation remained in high spirits during their stay in Marikina City. The city is hosting the Palarong Pambansa 2023, with the opening ceremonies scheduled for July 31.

The Concepcion Integrated School, where the 573-member Davraa delegation is accommodated, is four kilometers away from the Marikina River, which is known to overflow and cause flooding in some areas of the city during heavy rainfall.

"We are far from the possibility of experiencing floods," Atillo assured.

Atillo emphasized that their coordination with the local government of Marikina, particularly their disaster and rescue office, PNP, and other groups, has been ongoing to stay informed about the city's situation. This enables them to take appropriate and timely actions to ensure the delegation's safety.

"The Davraa management has a robust surveillance and preparation system to ensure the security and safety of the delegation. There's nothing to worry about despite the occasional downpours," Atillo stated.

He urged everyone to remain calm and expressed gratitude for their cooperation.

During the Davao Eagles' send-off on July 22 in Tagum City, Farnazo encouraged athletes and coaches to stick together as a delegation. He emphasized the importance of building social relationships and pledged to be accessible to the delegates by staying with the delegation himself. (MLSA)
