JOSE Maria College (JMC) woodpushers Hareve James Sumatra and Crystal Mae Relacion pocketed the gold medals in the Davao City Prisaa Meet 2019 chess competition held recently at the University of Mindanao (UM) Matina campus.
Sumatra, seeded second, edged fellow three pointers top seed John Ray Batucan, Andre Miguel Jorgio and Daniel Rome Borinaga, all from UM, via superior tiebreaks. Batucan, Jorgio and Borinaga placed second, third and fourth, respectively, in the four-round Swiss System format competition.
Sumatra defeated Jelord Villareal and Borinaga but drew wtih Jorgio and Batucan.
Tournament director Ronnie Tabudlong said the top four players will form the city team that will compete in the Regional Prisaa Meet 2019 on April 12 to 14 in Tagum City. Rowel Modina will coach the men's team.
In the distaff side, Relacion tallied three points to prevail over 2.5 scorers UM's Zsuzsa Grace Tabudlong and JMC's Rhea Maningas, Honey Grace Buenafe and Christy Buna.
Relacion beat Giddel Mirantes then she halved points with Tabudlong and Maningas. Relacion drew a fourth round bye. (Marianne L. Saberon-Abalayan)
