Samante: A Philippine High School for Sports

RECENTLY, Senate Bill 1086 or the Philippine High School for Sports Act of 2019 was passed on its third reading. This bill is the counterpart of the existing Philippine Science High School (PSHS) and Philippine High School for the Arts (PHSA). They share the same objective in training the best performing Filipino students, PSHS for Science and PHSA for the Arts. This time, the PHSS will cater to young Filipino prospects in sports.

What do we know about this bill thus far?

a. Long term commitment to a sports career is the basis for the recommendation to the program;

b. Its location is in New Clark City in Tarlac;

c. Its curricula will emphasize on athletic skills development;

d. Its end goal is to produce sports professionals capable of competing globally;

e. It will offer full and partial scholarships to accepted students.

This program is such a welcome development in the continuing improvement of our sports programs as a nation. It holds such promise that the future alumnus of this institution will become our sports flag bearers in the future. Incidentally, it is also worth looking into the status of the current PSHS and PHSA alumni roster. How many of them became our top scientists and artists?

This question is not to discount the various success of the alumni of both institutions. Their notable alumni have contributed to society in their capacities, albeit not as scientists and artists, strictly speaking.

In determining the success of a program, we look into the objectives vis a vis its products. We should be mindful of the outcomes of the PHSS, that they truly live out the aim of the program of producing globally competitive sports professionals.

The PSHS and PHSA are programs by which the PHSS can benchmark.

Still, in its early phases, administrators for the PHSS can learn a thing or two from the PSHS and PHSA on how to run a thriving institution. True to its mandate and objective as the premier high school for Philippine sports development.

The 2021-2022 school year is the target year of operations. There is still enough time for everyone to get our acts together.

“...the success of any school can be measured by the contribution the alumni make to our national life.”- John F. Kennedy

Notes from the sidelines:

Congratulations to the Little Knights for their recent win in the Vegas League basketball game last Sunday.
