Silvers, bronzes from judo, cycling

CEBU CITY -- Silver and bronze medals were all Davao City judo, cycling and karatedo teams could deliver on Day 3 of the Philippine National Games (PNG) 2018 on Tuesday, May 22.

National team member Jenilou Mosqueda, a former University of Mindanao standout, bowed to Filipino-Japanese Rena Furukawa in their women's -57 kilograms championship match at the University of San Carlos North Campus gym.

Furukawa was an unattached athlete in the Games but her winning the gold in the Games may yet earn her a spot in the national team.

Mosqueda recalled having played against the Fil-Japanese in a tune-up last 2015 where she defeated Furukawa.

"Malaki ang improvement nya. Advantage na nasa Japan sya naka-stay kasi mataas na evel na mga nakakalaro nya dun lagi. Regular mga tournaments nila," the six-time PNG champion told SunStar Davao. This was the first time she settled for PNG silver.

Over in Danao City, Davao City riders Bryan Cantamayor, Angelica Acedo and Liz Abellana added medals in their respective categories of the road bike individual time trial event.

Abellana got a silver while Cantamayor and Acedo each took a bronze. Last Sunday, Acedo also bagged a bronze in mountainbike cross-country event.

At the SM Seaside, Maridel Flores of Davao City snatched a bronze in girls junior individual kata.

Karatedo coach Bern Rexander Tacay said he is hopeful that they could deliver more when action resumes today. His younger sister Miyuki, a member of the national team, will compete today while his brother Rexor will see action on Thursday. Both recently won golds in a tournament in Indonesia.
