Tancontian wins gold, silver

DECORATED judoka Chino Tancontian of University of Sto. Tomas (UST) bagged a gold medal and a silver at the close of the annual Hajime International Invitational Judo Tournament held at the Ateneo de Manila University (Admu) Blue Eagles Gym in Quezon City over the weekend.

Tancontian, a reigning University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) champion and most valuable player who hails from Davao City, subdued a Univeristy of the Philippines (UP) opponent via ippon in the men's junior -90 kilograms division finals to clinch the gold.

He earlier upset former three-time Uaap champion Jayvee Ferrer of Far Eastern Philippines (FEU) via waza-ari after beating an Admu foe in the first round.

Tancontian, meanwhile, fell short of the gold in men's senior -90 kgs senior category. He settled for the silver instead after bowing to Singaporean judo supertstar and Southeast Asian Games silver medalist Gary Chow via waza-ari ippon.

The Dabawenyo ace, however, outclassed another UP judoka and a French veteran prior to the finals.
