Usep, Ateneo to vie at MCC S2 finals
TWO top collegiate esports teams from Mindanao—DEEA-Aguila of the University of Southeastern Philippines (Usep) and Ateneo de Davao University's Ateneo Esports—will compete in the MCC S2 Championship Stage from July 11 to 13 at the SM Mall of Asia Music Hall in Manila.
DEEA-Aguila (Aguila Esports) and Ateneo Esports secured their spots after winning intense qualifiers, becoming the only Mindanao teams in the national final eight.
"We really prepared for this competition, and we hope we can come home as champions," said DEEA-Aguila coach and analyst Ori Lindayag at the Davao Sportswriters Association Forum on July 3.
Team captain Joshua Macantan and EXP laner Khent Omblero joined Lindayag in sharing their journey. Macantan said their preparation involved not only game strategy but also discipline and emotional control.
"I already loved online games like Counter-Strike and Dota 2 when I was young,” Macantan shared. “But I realized the need to balance gaming with academics. You can’t just play—you have to manage your time.”
Aguila Esports started as a self-funded team with support from players and managers. They continue to seek sponsorships and local government support.
Moonton, the developer of Mobile Legends, granted Davao a wildcard slot this season. Aguila Esports clinched it by dominating the group stages and knockout rounds.
The MCC S2 National Finals will feature 18 teams: four from Luzon, two each from Visayas and Mindanao, and several from wildcard entries. Games include Mobile Legends and Tekken, with top prizes reaching ₱100,000 and gear sponsorships from Oppo.
Macantan described today's esports scene as faster and more competitive than the offline games of the past. “Mobile Legends now is more intense and highly competitive. Everyone wants to be a champion. You must stay focused and not let emotions get in the way, especially when you lose,” he said.
He also offered advice to aspiring gamers: “Gaming is fun and can be a passion, but education must come first. Control your emotions. Don’t let the game control you. Learn to balance. Family and studies still come first.”
Aguila Esports will face powerhouse teams, including defending champion National University and the recent NCO World Cup winner. But they remain focused on giving their best.
“Win or lose, we’re proud to represent Davao and Mindanao,” Lindayag said. “We’re ready to give it our all.” Dia Mae M. Pandolo, Spamast Intern
