Duterte explained that the Black Nazarene symbolizes God’s unwavering guidance, walking with humanity and carrying the cross for salvation.

“Our devotion to the Black Nazarene is a testament to our profound trust in God’s miracles that have become the spring that gives us strength, courage, and the inspiration to be resilient as we hold fast to our faith and overcome the challenges coming our way,” Duterte said in a statement on January 9, 2024.

She also called on Filipinos to embody humility, kindness, and mercy, particularly toward those in need and those who face persecution. Duterte encouraged everyone to pray for healing, wisdom, and guidance, not only for the nation but also for those who are sick, struggling, or nearing the end of their lives.

Meanwhile, President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. underscored the Feast of the Black Nazarene as a profound expression of Filipino faith. He noted that acts like walking barefoot during the procession symbolize prayer and sacrifice, reminding Filipinos that no burden is too heavy to bear.

“May this day inspire us to care for one another and hold firm in the belief that our better days are ahead,” he said.

In Davao City, the Our Lady of Peñafrancia Church in Dela Homes Esperanza, Tigatto, marked its 10th Devotional Fiesta in honor of the Poong Hesus Nazareno. The enshrined replica of the Nazarene is an official copy from the Minor Basilica and National Shrine of the Poong Nazareno in Quiapo, Manila. RGP
