FIFTEEN soldiers from the Philippine Army’s 94th Infantry (Mandirigma) Battalion (94IB) received the Military Merit Medal on Monday, June 9, 2025, for their bravery.

The awards recognized their actions in a June 6 encounter with remnants of the Communist Terrorist Group (CTG) in Barangay Buenavista, Himamaylan City, Negros Occidental.

Major General Michael Samson, commander of the Philippine Army’s 3rd Infantry (Spearhead) Division, presided over the awarding ceremony at the 94IB headquarters in Barangay Libas, Isabela, Negros Occidental.

“Our men deserve to be recognized for their efforts and sacrifices—especially in combat. I have full confidence that under the leadership of your Brigade and Battalion Commander, the 94IB will continue to achieve more victories against the NPA and successfully accomplish its mission in the Negros Island Region,” Samson said.

Samson emphasized that the ceremony symbolized more than just recognition; it honored the sacrifices made by soldiers in safeguarding peace in Himamaylan City and the Negros Island Region.

He urged citizens to continue supporting the Philippine Army.

The commendation was given to two officers and 13 enlisted personnel. They played key roles in the June 6 encounter, which resulted in the neutralization of a New People’s Army (NPA) remnant and the recovery of an M16 rifle along with other war materiel. The individual killed was identified as Jun-Jun Benoy, alias Gringo, who reportedly had pending warrants of arrest.

The firefight in Barangay Buenavista resulted from sustained army operations aimed at clearing insurgent remnants in the region. The 94IB has actively engaged in counter-insurgency efforts in Negros Occidental and surrounding areas as part of the Armed Forces of the Philippines' internal security operations.

The award ceremony also underscored the importance of ongoing collaboration between the military and local communities to maintain peace and security.

Samson’s visit reinforced the army’s commitment to supporting its units on the ground and acknowledging the risks soldiers face during combat operations. (Leo Solinap/SunStar Philippines)
